A new junior partner joins the team

From retailer to banker – A new junior partner David Wakelin has been promoted following an extensive apprenticeship within Bankbrokers’ team of experts. His promotion into the role shows the business is committed to developing and growing talent.

David shares his thoughts on his appointment as a new junior partner

From an early age, I developed an aptitude for numbers. On leaving school, I was keen to explore the accounting profession. I completed an accountancy course alongside working in a part-time retail role in Sainsbury’s

He adds:

Sainsbury’s then offered me a promotion to a Team Leader role upon completing my accountancy exams. In addition, the management team highlighted further internal upward development opportunities as part of my retail career development. However, in 2017, after 11 years with Sainsbury’s, there was a round of redundancies. There was an opportunity for me to explore other avenues more aligned to my passion for numbers, so I decided that the time was right for me to make a big career break.

David developed his interest and desire to work with numbers in an international banking consultancy.

At the time, after a long career with HSBC, Bankbrokers appointed my father as Regional Director for Wales, West & Ireland. He suggested an apprenticeship with them might give me the chance to explore my interest working with numbers in a flexible and friendly environment. In addition, I would gain experience working for a leading international banking consultancy firm. So, I took the plunge and have never looked back since. Under his stewardship, I’ve been learning every aspect of the role. As a result, my father has given me a 40-year banking and consultancy download in just 4 years.

Working with a leading Payments expert has developed David’s skills.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been able to work alongside my father. He has a breadth and depth of banking and merchant services experience. In addition, his knowledge of the financial services industry generally is immense. He is probably one of the industry’s leading Payments experts. Also, he has really helped me to learn this topic at breakneck speed.

Over the last four years, I have taken on a broad range of responsibilities for the team. For example, data analytics and client support. Also, support for the UK Partners. In addition, I’ve found an affinity towards Merchant Services where I can now price any client at a glance knowing the current UK marketplace inside and out. I’m also learning more and more everyday about all other areas of core transactional commercial banking. I’m like a sponge soaking up all the knowledge. I can with incredible exposure to all sectors and size of British and Irish companies.

Continuing to grow and deliver success for clients

I am delighted that my contributions to Bank Brokers have been fully recognised. In addition, I am grateful to Neil, our local CEO, for entrusting me with a Junior Partner position.

The role carries significantly enhanced responsibilities, and I look forward immensely to the challenges ahead. Finally, I look forward to the continued success of our team.
